MUCH MORE PERSONAL

Of course I appreciate the Academy for enabling me to do what I love (teach yoga). But what I took away from my time in training was much more personal than just a certificate. I kept myself in a bubble for years, afraid to try new things because I was petrified of failure and didn't trust myself to succeed. Teacher Training was a big leap of faith for me--one of the biggest I had ever taken--and when I came out on the other side with a dream accomplished, it gave me a self assurance I had never had.

The Intensive Program

The program provides big rewards in exchange for a serious commitment to learning. It’s the fastest path to your 200-hour certification.

Offered four times a year, Intensive classes are held Mondays through Fridays. Each day begins at 6:30 a.m. and ends at 8:00 p.m. It’s a daily challenge you’ll grow to love! After you complete the 200 Hour program you can continue on (if invited) to the 500 Hour program or join the 500 Hour program later in the year.

You’ll also attend a Sunday Orientation from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. where you’ll meet your teachers, mingle with other students, take you first technique class with us and enjoy a tour of the Sunstone Academy.

A Yoga Teacher Training Course

I joined Sunstone's teacher training to deepen my knowledge and to share my love of yoga with others. What I found was a supportive community of like- minded individuals-- a family. What I gained was a deep understanding of myself. My mind was opened and my horizons expanded. It is truly an experience from which I will continue to discover the multitude of rewards for a lifetime.
Ashley Lewelling

The teacher training program at Sunstone Yoga provided me with a well-rounded, diverse and flexible learning experience into the world of yoga. For me, the training program quickly evolved from a simple certification process into a deeper understanding of myself, my body, my goals, and my lifestyle. Surrounded by a supportive staff, in a challenging yet encouraging environment, I found a beautiful learning experience that prepared me for the challenges of teaching as well as challenges in other aspects of my life. I found the experience invaluable and I would recommend Sunstone Yoga's teacher training program to anyone interested in deepening their practice and finding a new life path in a nurturing environment.

Jenny Childress

When I decided to do the teacher training intensive, I wanted to get deeper into my practice; I never expected the life-changing experience that I ended up getting. Besides growing stronger and more knowledgeable in my own physical practice, I learned a wide range of cutting-edge information – from exercise physiology to ancient philosophy and techniques. The friends I made along the way will be my friends for life. And when I say, "life-changing," I'm not exaggerating. Two weeks after training was over, I made the permanent move from LA to Dallas and completely changed my career and goals in life.

Alex Newell

I had one intention when starting the teacher training program: to establish a mind-body connection (basically to go deeper within my own yoga practice).  Looking back now, I have achieved this and so, so much more!  The best thing that I have EVER done was to take this step and open myself up to a new realm of possibilities and self-expansion.  My body is changing.  My thought process is evolving.  My heart is opening.  I simply cannot imagine my life now without this program!

I NEEDED A CHANGE

I reached a major transition in my life back in 2011. I was working the corporate job with high anxiety and an irregular fitness routine. I needed a change, a shift... I was able to find a home with Sunstone. A community where I felt welcomed and wanted. I was able to gain control of my life and unwanted stress. They even helped me find a new career and a whole new start through their teacher training program. I now work with an awesome Sunstone Team and I couldn't be happier

What to expect as a Sunstone Academy student

Each Sunstone Academy program begins with a “Meet and Greet” orientation session in which new students meet their classmates and Academy faculty. Orientation is a great time to ask questions and receive additional information regarding the content and methodology behind our proven certification programs.

During training studies include classical yoga postures, teaching Technique and Methodology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Philosophy, Ethics and Lifestyle. Each attendee will learn how to:

  • Lead confident, consistent, and inspired classes
  • Teach classical Vinyasa (200 hour) and Hatha (500 hour) postures and develop class sequences from those postures. Trainees will master an example sequence for each class type.
  • Provide adjustments and advancements to students’ postures without embarrassment
  • Make each student feel comfortable no matter their experience level
  • Answer questions regarding yoga history and methodology
  • Provide a class atmosphere that’s nurturing, welcoming and ultimately inspiring—a sanctuary from the stresses and demands of modern life

A great training program is made up of a great team. Unlike smaller courses, Sunstone’s certification programs are led by a robust and diverse team of talented instructors.

Each faculty member contributes his or her unique skills, background, support and thousands of hours of teaching experience to your personal development. You'll acquire knowledge and hone your teaching skills with a combination of classroom instruction and personal coaching from our faculty.

Why our teacher training is different

Sunstone Academy Teacher Training is an educational program containing content created from extensive yoga teaching experience and years of development.  Our training is structured specifically to help students successfully turn a passion for yoga, fitness, health and helping others into a career.

Our trainees acquire three different types of knowledge during training, each of equal importance in preparing them to teach.  Each will master yoga studies, become proficient in practicing yoga postures, and learn to excel at teaching classes confidently and accurately.

We not only teach theory and mastery of postures, but also provide training in the art of “how to teach”.

Each of the Sunstone Academy programs have been designed by our senior instructors and teaching faculty.  We receive real world feedback on our results — from a community of Sunstone Academy graduates who teach over 640 classes a week. Our faculty remembers just what it was like to teach their first class, and is committed to presenting information and demonstrating skills that help each trainee grow into a successful yoga instructor. The courses are demanding, but the rewards are huge! And best of all, the techniques are tested every day in our thriving community.

We provide programs that accommodate all types of schedules, and make it easy to begin learning sooner without having to put life, family or a career on hold.

Sunstone Academy teacher training is divided into 200 Hour and 300 Hour segments that do not have to be completed back-to-back, thus making it easier to jump right in.

200 Hour Program:  Learn the principles of Vinyasa yoga – the most popular style of group yoga class – and develop your teaching skill by learning to teach Sunstone’s EARTH series Vinyasa flow class.  We follow the Yoga Alliance training hour requirements in the following areas.

  •     Technique Training/Practice
  •     Teaching Methodology
  •     Anatomy and Physiology
  •     Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle and Ethics for Yoga Teachers
  •     Practicum
When you successfully complete the 200 Hour program, you’ll earn your Sunstone Academy 200-hour Teaching Certificate.  You’ll also be ready to:

  •     Teach Vinyasa yoga, which is great for most organizations
  •     Apply for your Yoga Alliance 200-hour certificate
  •     Apply to join our 500-hour program

300 hour upgrade and Sunstone Certifications:  Learn classical Hatha postures and an example Hatha class sequence, our Pain Free Yoga techniques, advanced Hatha methodology, Practicum teaching in the Hatha method, and delve deeper into Subtle Energy and Philosophy studies.

Upon successful completion of the 300 Hour program, we award Sunstone Academy’s 500-hour Teaching Certificate.  At this level students are ready to:

    • Teach vinyasa and hatha yoga – broadening your appeal as a yoga instructor
    • Apply for Yoga Alliance 500-hour certificate
    • Apply to join the Sunstone Team!

Does this describe YOU?

If you practice yoga almost every day…if your car’s full of yoga mats, water bottles and gym bags…if you plan your social life around your yoga classes…I think it’s a safe bet that yoga’s really important to you.

In fact, you may be wondering how you can incorporate more yoga into your life, but aren’t sure how to do it.

Don’t worry, we’ve all felt this way!

Even though I had a successful career in finance, I often wished I didn’t work such long hours so I could attend more yoga classes. Eventually, I realized that my personal priorities were changing. Yoga provided me with the personal fulfillment and growth I’d been seeking, and there was no point in denying it any more!

This is when I made the decision to become a certified yoga teacher.

I still remember my first teacher training class. Even though I’d been practicing yoga for three years, I could tell that some of the other students had been practicing for a lot longer. But the biggest surprise of all was that training to become a yoga teacher actually helped me become a much better student!

After just four weeks immersed in yoga study and lifestyle, I felt stronger and healthier than ever—better than when I was a professional athlete! I was 100% prepared to teach, and that’s exactly what I’ve been doing ever since!
