I took my 9th Fire class (12th class overall) on Saturday morning. I think I was pretty well hydrated beforehand.

Afterward, I felt extremely nauseated and headachy no matter how much water I drank. I also had Gatorade, salt water, and bananas. Nothing helped. The sick feeling lasted until Monday, and even today (Tuesday) I still feel a bit off. It felt like an incredibly bad hangover, to be honest. I have not practiced since then, but I will probably go back on Friday.

I plan to try having some electrolyte powder right after class next time in case that was the problem. Any other ideas about what might have happened to me?

Up until this incident, I only had a little trouble with nausea during the standing series of fire, but nothing that lingered after class. I drink at least 72 ounces of water a day, more if I am doing yoga.

    Hi Jessi,

It sounds like it could have been something else that just showed up around the time you practiced because typically once we rest (or better yet sleep) and re-balance our electrolytes we feel just fine if not better than ever.

Your water intake sounds about right. There are suggestions that you should have 1/2 your body weight in ounces every day (ie 120lbs = 60oz). 3-4 liters per day should keep you very well hydrated even if you are in the hot room daily. It is possible but very very very rare for someone to be drinking TOO MUCH water. It doesn't sound like you are but you are your own best judge.

Another thing to consider is what you ate or didn't eat that day and the night before (or drank: alcohol + hotroom = havoc).

What we do/don't drink, do/don't eat, how well we sleep and whether or not we are fighting something off will all affect how we feel when we practice.

Congrats on 12 classes, keep at it and remember that you are a scientist now, so alter the variables one at a time to see what works for you!

Wow! So sorry to hear you had this experience. I do not know what the cause was. It sounds like you are on top of you water intake. Good job there! I am glad you plan to take electrolytes, but just remember that taking them after class really doesn't do much unless you take them every day (in some form). I usually mix them in my water when taking or teaching a class. Other factors can affect your level of hydration. Lack of sleep, Stress levels, smoking, drinking and caffiene, foods heavy in sugar. Nausea can also be caused by eating close to practice time. Try not to get overwhelmed by all this It takes a while to find out what your body needs. Don't give up and trust that you will find the natural rhythm for you and your practice.

Keep us updated about how things level out and any realizations you have

    Jessi,

I feel your pain. I've felt that way a couple of times during and after class. I've found that it was what I ate or did the night before.

12 classes is AWESOME! Stick with it.

I had been to about 20 Fire classes (I am new to yoga) and then went to a Fire 90 class last Saturday morning and felt dizzy and ill during the class. I actually sat out a few poses, which I never had done in the previous classes. I hydrated after the class and went on to my horseback riding lesson, so I didn't feel as ill as you described, but it was a miserable class for me. I tried to figure out what was different about that class and the things I came up with were a half a glass of wine I had the night before (I hadn't had any alcohol in months) and not hydrating enough before the class that morning because I slept in a little later. I went back the next day and every day since then so....keep plugging away. I just think there will be a day like that now and then.

Jessi I went through the same thing. When you go back try every third day and see how you feel. I had the same hangover. Its called detox, I got detox headaches and actually alot more symptoms than you had. I gutted it out and worked on eating much better food and it worked itself out. It will be worth it you have my guarantee.
