just wondering if anyone has any advice for post yoga meals~ i know not to eat for 2-3 hours beforehand, and afterwords i take an electrolyte tablet in my water... after class i always feel GREAT and engergized, while guzzling water, and have zero appetite... all i have to go on is my knowledge of fueling the body for endurance sports (ie, running, triathlons, etc) which makes me feel like i should be eating something after class, seeing as i start class completely empty~ what do yall do for your post yoga meals? if anything? i want to keep my energy levels up, without taking in too many calories... which begs the question, how many calories do the classes at sunstone burn? any tips you can share would be appreciated! thannks! k |

Kristin, So glad to see this question come up on the forums. I would ask you to focus on your practice rather than on burning calories. As your practice evolves, you will continue build muscle mass and burn calories. Try not to focus on numbers but how your feel both on and off the mat. You will begin to pick up some very strong signals from your body in terms of your specific nutritional needs. Our teacher trainees learn that to facilitate muscle healing and stabilization of blood/glucose levels it is important to eat in the 30 minutes following a strenuous class. Consume a small amount of protein to assist your muscles in the repair process and also include a small amount of complex carbohydrate. So for example, a handful of walnuts and some whole grain cereal with fresh berries and soy milk would be a good choice. You don't have to consume a large amount, keep the portions small so you stay comfortable after practice, then later when your body is ready, you can eat more healthy food. Remember to also include lots of water before during and after practice to maintain adequate hydration. I hope you find this information helpful. See you in the studio. Barbara |

Hi Kristin! I usually practice in the morning, so here is my eating routine (most of the time). Breakfast is either a piece of fruit if I am going to practice right away, or if I won't be practicing for a couple hours I blend a drink made of water, banana, apple, clementine and blueberry pomegranate juice, also fresh kale and spinach. I practice, then after class have a salad with light dressing and dark leafy greens. I also have a sweet potato or maybe butternut squash or a quinoa salad... Lunch is usually the biggest meal of the day for me. I don't overeat but I eat until my body feels sated. When I first started at Sunstone I had very diffrent eating habits. I would go out to eat and gorge myself only to find at the end of my first month that I'd gained weight and wasn't having an easy time during fire class. Over time I learned to adapt my eating to fit my practice and I feel much more balanced mentally and physically. Of course I've lost weight and gained muscle, but that is just the happy outcome of learning how to balance things out in your yoga practice. It's not a specific diet, more listening to what the body needs. Happy Journeys! |

Thanks so much! I definitely agree with the importance of focusing on my practice... focusing on anything else while in class is nearly impossible for me, seeing as i am pretty new to this style of yoga. I have found that smaller, nutrient dense meals throughout the day are best. And I feel like a million bucks off of the mat too! Sunstone is the best! Thanks! |
