I've been wearing Under Armour heat gear lined shorts. They have a heat liner, they're uber light, and very cooling. They come in several lengths and you can get them for about $25 at the Under Armour Outlet. I have no comparison to anything else, so I don't know if they're better or worse... but they're a TON better than the cotton shorts I wore to my first class! LOL
