In Dhanurasana, I seem to get stuck with how far I can kick back because of pain in my knees -- right at my knees and about the top 2 or 3 inches above my knees. It's a pulling pain, enough to make me let up. It happens in both standing and floor bow, but more noticeable in standing bow. I've heard some instructors say to press the foot into the hand, but I've noticed that seems to make the pain worse. I really don't have any other knee problems, and don't know of any knee injuries. Any thoughts?

This is not uncommon and there is a fix that seems to always work. Instead of thinking of kicking back focus on kicking up. This will utilize the glut (butt) muscle. Because the glut is now involved more the back of the leg will be more stable and thus the knee will be more stable. A stable knee will tolerate the kicking more. Plus using the glut will create lift without the need for as much kick. Come to Saturday Noon Wood class at Uptown if these directions don't do the trick.

Awesome! That works much better. The instruction I've heard is "kick back." I don't recall a "kick up." What a difference. I do Wood once a week, so will try to be patient with my gluts getting the strength they need to go higher in this pose. Thanks so much -- Janet
