Vrksasana has always been one of my favourite poses in yoga, and I just love taking it to its fullest expression. Is there a reason we modify it here at Sunstone, and would I be terrible for sticking to what I know (the modification also does not seem to agree with the old injury in my left knee)?

I just found out in a class last week that the modification to Tree Pose was recommended by physical therapists. Another instructor also told me that too many people who release their foot don't stay in proper alignment, so it could do more harm than good.
I'm sure some of the more experienced yogis out there can be more specific, but that's what I've learned about Tree.

Hello Melissa,

There are many versions of Tree Pose taught in Hatha Yoga, it is not surprising considering the variety of yoga schools in the west. Here are six to name just a few, Adho Mukha Vrikshashasana, Adho Mukha Vrikshasana in Padmasana, Eka Bhuja Adho Mukha Vrikshasana in Padmasana, Bikram/ Gosh’a Vrikshasana with Toe Stand, Eka Bhuja adho Mukha Vrikshasana, Iyengar Vrikshasasana.


At Sunstone Yoga we teach Vrikshasana from the traditions of our lineage which comes from the Ghosh/Bikram Lineage from the College of India in Calcutta. We have made no modifications from our lineage. Taking the pose to its fullest expression depends upon the lineage from where you were taught and depends upon the range of motion in the body. If you have a previous injury which prevents you from placing the foot in the position we teach in Fire. Our teachers are highly trained at the 500 hr level and are able to guide you into a safe modification to help strengthen and align the form and structure of your body.


My recommendation is to not think the teacher is taking something away from you, but are merely adding a different technique and style to your repertoire of asanas. Who knows you may experience a new revelation with your body and its range of motion. Let me know if this suggestion is helpful.
