Hello everyone!

I had a very challenging experience during my 11th session, and I wanted to see if this  one is peculiar to me.

I actually had to leave the room before the 90 minute session was up.  I had started to get head rushes and nausea to the point where I was seriously concerned about my health. Now, I have had my share of challenges before during sessions (dizziness, headache, nausea, etc.), but after resting out a posture or two I have always been able to get back into the swing.  This time however, it was totally different, and I was forced to give in to my body's demands.

I have never seen anyone else leave the floor early, and I was very upset with myself for this.  As such, I wanted to know if anyone else has ever had such a serious reaction during a session before, or if this is something peculiar to me.  I had plenty of hydration beforehand, and I had a near empty stomach (had eaten a healthy lunch about 3.5 hours beforehand). I will say that I did not get much sleep the night before (about 5 hours), and this might have been part of the problem.

Thank you for any feedback or experiences you have to share with me, and I apologize to anyone who was in session with me that day. I was very sad to have left the yoga room early, but I honestly had no choice except to risk getting seriously sick. As it was I continued to feel weak the rest of the night, and even felt a bit woozy the next morning!

I plan on getting back on the saddle (so to speak) tonight after taking the following day off. I am trying not to allow my confidence to get any lower than it already is!

Cheers to all,
Robert

Robert,

We all have tough sessions - and at 11 classes your body is still adapting to your yoga practice. Plenty of folks have left class before the end so don't beat yourself up about that - it is best not to do it but sometimes it happens.

There are lots of variables that can influence your performance including how rested you are and what you are eating. Are you sure you are getting enough protein in your diet? Are you coming down with a cold or allergies?

One thing I strongly recommend is that you really pay attention to your breathing. Don't practice so 'hard' that you can't keep your breath under control. I see lots of male students doing this in the early stages of their practice and find myself wondering how long until they hit 'the wall'. If you deprive your body of oxygen while exerting your self you can wear yourself out very quickly. Pace yourself and your strength and stamina will evolve steadily.

Dealing with days where your practice is difficult is part of the journey - accept that there will be those days - and learn how to listen to your body so you can live in those moments as well.

Thank you so much for your considerate response. Everything you said makes perfect sense to me. I had session #12 on Monday and it was still a serious struggle, but I made it through the 90 minutes. I think you are right about my body still adjusting to the practice.

I do a very good job at focusing on my breathing, and there have been times when that alone kept me going. I sometimes try too hard on a pose, but am usually pretty good at recognizing this and backing down a bit.

I think the fact that I am seriously out of shape is the biggest culprit, and this is just more of a reason to keep trying. This hot Yoga is one of the most difficult things I have ever tried to do, but perhaps that is what makes it worthwhile...it is great for my spiritual practice as well as my physical health.

I will continue paying attention to diet, sleep, allergies, etc. and I also will not feel quite as bad if I do need to leave the room (although I would hope this to be exceptionally rare).

Cheers,
Robert

Hi Robert.  I've only got 79 or so sessions under my belt, so I'm no expert, but I can relate to having days when it's much harder than others - and no single reason I can see as to why.  Sometimes I think it's because I'm tired, sometimes I've had some caffiene earlier in the day, sometimes what I ate (even 4 or 5 hours before) is just not digesting right.

Then there are times when I feel great, but cannot balance well or I'm just "off" on my poses.   I'm trying to take it one class at a time and just let my body do the talking.  And, of course, attempting to avoid any of the above factors that might make it less comfortable for me to practice.

I applaud everyone for being there through the entire class, but students (like me) who are in less than perfect shape inspire me more than anything!  So, you might be inspiring someone and not even know it!

Shelley
