Hello everyone!

By the end of this week I will have hit session number 10, and I cannot thank Sunstone Yoga enough for helping me get on track to physical fitness, while also allowing me the chance to combine exercise with my spiritual practice.

I do have one add question for you: It has been about 2-1/2 weeks since I started and I have gained 5 pounds.  I had to weigh myself twice because I could not believe what I saw!   This is important because I am desperately trying to lose weight! I have been eating much healthier (fruits, veggies, soy proteins, etc.) and have eliminated almost all meat except for fish.  Given that each Fire session is a serious workout for me, I am puzzled to understand what is happening to me!! I can say that I feel so much better already, and can tell you all that my body is thanking me (especially my back and knees, which already ache less and are more flexible).

I am sure this is a temporary situation, but I was interesting in getting an expert opinion. I mean...even when I was completely sedentary and eating poorly I would not gain weight this fast.  LOL.

Much Love to Everyone,
Robert

Couple of things come to mind -

1) have you really gained 5 pounds on average? I weigh ~167 but my weight will fluctuate through the day from 165-172. To understand your actual weight you need to weigh at the same time and under the same conditions every day and track the data in a spreadsheet. Then you can look at the trend over time and not be misled by short term fluctuations.
2) As you continue with the yoga you will exchange body fat with muscle mass - muscles are more dense and heavier. You will look and be more trim but you could increase weight. For me - I lost about 15 pounds over the 1st 6 months but then added back 5.
3) be careful with a near vegetarian diet (I am a vegetarian) as it can be high in calories - losing weight is still essentially a function of burning more calories than you consume. If you cut your portion sizes by 25% and keep your physical activity the same you will lose weight. Of course you need to eat enough to sustain yourself but listen to your body and you'll know what to do.

Don't worry about the weight - focus on how you feel - and the fit of your clothes will be a better indicator of your body changes.

Metta,

Ben

Thank you Ben!

It seems that my weight has balanced out and is now headed slightly in the right direction in the last few days. I certainly have no expectation (nor desire) for rapid weight loss, but was puzzled by things going in the reverse direction!

I agree that changes to a diet require caution and patience, and going vegetarian does not equate to automatically losing weight (or even healthy eating for that matter), but I really have been doing well on that end, I promise.  I have a new question, one that I will post as a new message.

Your reply is most appreciated! Please continue to give advice to us novices...the community connection really helps me to keep going strong.

Yours Sincerely
Robert

Robert,

I've been on a life-style change type diet since January.  I added yoga about 2 months ago and hit my first plateau.  The funny things was that everyone started commenting on my appearance when I plateaued on the scale.  I attribute this to the muscle for fat exchange.

If you want to be sure you're doing things right, you can sign up at sparkpeople.com, which is the free diet & nutrition site I use.  You can tell them how many calories you burn every week, what you weigh, and what you want to weigh - and they will give you nutritional ranges for calories, fat, carbs, and protein.  Then you tell it what you eat everyday and it lets you know how you're doing.  The site is free, and they have several nutritional experts on staff.

Good luck with your weight loss - it sure is a tough battle to fight.

Namaste - Lauren
