Hi, I'm a new yoga student (11 classes).  I really like it but have two questions.

  1. I have extremely sensitive skin, for instance, I can't wear perfume, use scented soap or makeup. My face and neck are especially sensitive, I have to use special laundry detergent and/or double-rinse my pillowcases or I get a rash. I've always had a problem with swimming in salt water because of this, and now the same problem is popping up in yoga with all the sweating I'm doing in class.  I rinse my face immediately after class but it doesn't seem to be helping. Does anyone have any ideas, or should I see a dermatologist?
  2. I'm always so sore for a day or two after class.  At first I didn't mind because it lets me know that I'm doing something productive, but now I'm getting just a little tired of always being sore.  Will this get better?

Thanks in advance,

Barbara

Hi Barabara

Thanks for posting and welcome to Sunstone Yoga.

  1. Its difficult to isolate the exact cause of your rash. You are welcome to bring your own mat (mats can be purchased at the studio) and towels from home to see if these are the cause. You are probably aware of this, but you should also remove all makeup before class and not use moisturizers. With consistent practice you may experience a change in salt balance that may alleviate the problem to some degree.
  2. The degree of soreness you are currently experiencing will vary as you develop your practice.

Hello Barbara,

I agree with Fried on this one. Try bringing in your own towel, the yogi toes towel is fantastic it does not slip or wrinkle up on your mat. Forget about any moisturizer it is not beneficial for your pores in the heat.

Also to add. Something to think about....The external heat is one factor as to why the breaking out, but also consider your own natural internal fire / heat. I am naturally hot internally in nature and I had to change some things in my diet when I started yoga in the heat. Caffeine of any nature is not helpful to my internal heat. I feel the temp rise 5 degs more when I drink caffeine before class. Avoid Pasta, white potatoes, heavy animal proteins, garlic, onions, hot peppers, eggplant, root vegetables these all will increase your body temp too. I am not telling you to give up your favorite foods however I am asking you to consider avoiding these if you intend to take a class on the same day.

Hope this is helpful. Enjoy your practice. The aches can be helped with a good soak in Epsom salts in a warm bath. Yoga draws toxins out of our blood, muscles, internal organs and our bones. So the aching can be from the toxins and waste leaving your body. All is good.

Peace

Nicole

I'm in trouble now......

you just listed everything on my diet up there! I havent even been to my first class yet. what should I eat/not eat before hand (the day of)? Also, I am very hot natured, I have the highest electric bill in the summer! is the heat going to get to me? that is my main concern. I don't do well in heat. my friend said I will get used to it.

I am excited about this, but still a little aprehensive , if that makes sense.

Thanks so much for any help you can give someone who has never done this before :o)

Annie

Hi Anne,

Now is the perfect time to consider doing a spring time clease with your body. It is a time to empty out the trash in our little bodies. So eating Fruits and fresh leafy green vegetables and fresh juices and lemon and lime water. Eat some steamed brown rice or white rice, but avoidd any wheat products. No bread, cakes, crackers. Star for three days and extend it to 5 days and into 10 days. Basically eat only steamed vegetables and rice and lots of fresh fruits (avoid oranges, grapefruit, tomatoes). Because this is a first time deal. Stick to dedicating 3 days, if you make it to three days extend into 5... See how things progress.
Let me know how you go. Your body temp will drop after three days once you eliminate some of the debris in the intestines.

Peace
Nicole

I have never thought about cleansing my body in that way. I too am about to take my first class and I am very excited about the benefits of yoga. The spring time cleanse is a perfect suggestion. Thanks!
