What's Sunstone's Philosophy on the Front Row? On another yoga board they have brought this topic up and I had never thought about students' placements in the room. I do realize that people work off of others' energies but when do you feel it's acceptable to move to the front? I've been consistent with being up front (not necessarily center) but that's always been because it's helpful to just focus on myself in the mirror when I'm in a pose, observing my alignment, etc. I guess I hadn't realized the responsibility of being in the "prime spot."

Just curious! :) Thanks!

Casey,

Sunstone Yoga doesn't have a front row policy. It can be very beneficial to practice all over the room; even the places you are uncomfortable. In time you will be comfortable practicing anywhere in the room. This may have the added benefit of relating to overcoming discomforts outside the yoga room.

If being on the front row becomes an attachment for a student then their practice is pretty fragile. All it would take is a day when they were not on the front row (for whatever reason) to throw them off. A strong student is not just a student who can hold all the postures the full time on the front row. A strong student is a student who can maintain their composure regardless of the circumstances. This takes physical, metal and emotional strength.

Each of us has a responsibility to ourselves to step out of our comfort zones and to do so with resolve. It will follow naturally that we fulfill other responsibilities in turn.

The more centered we are internally, the less the impact of the external. Yoga provides this experience.

Brandon -u really have just given me a new perspective - maybe i need to be the back rows where I might not see myself - by the way, i fell in an old water well (top was missing) on Sunday - I took a gash out of my thigh - Paul took me to the emergency room and got 20 stitches- I get them out in one week - keep me in your thoughts and prayers!

Hmmm... I've never given a lot (any!) thought as to being in the front, middle (when crowded), or back row. I usually pick a spot on the back row, though, because I find that I get a bit of vertigo when I'm in front close to the mirror. I think the lack of a peripheral view causes that. I doubt it would be an issue if the mirror wasn't there.

Speaking of leg issues, my orthopedic surgeon just set me free, so, I'll be back in class in another 10 days with a new titanium hip! My second!!
