I have started practicing yoga in Romania in 1991, mostly for stress management and to improve my learning abilities, as I was studying to become M.D. Very soon I realized that yoga could be much more than that, and it became my new way of life starting with adopting a vegetarian diet and embracing the philosophical principles described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The deeper I went in my readings about yoga, the more I understood it and was able to apply it in my daily life. I have enjoyed the challenge yoga brought in my life and how it changed my life forever. Every step I took in the process of becoming a yogi was meaningful to me, even set-backs caused by diseases and injuries, which I saw them as karmic obstacles on my spiritual path, really a blessing in disguise, because it gave me the chance to look back at my life and reevaluate what I was doing wrong. Through my practice I was building self confidence and the courage to make changes in my life, such as the important decision to emigrate to U.S.
After I moved to Dallas in 1999, I have continued to improve my yoga practice in various styles: Bikram, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Anusara, Thai Yoga, meditation and the art of devotional instrument playing (kirtan). Every time I was going back to the yoga room I was finding my inspiration and my purpose in life. In 2000 I received initiation in Kriya Yoga by the monks of the Self Realization Fellowship, a monastic society founded by Paramahansa Yogananda, with headquarters in Los Angeles, California, and I have been a disciple ever since.
I became a Sunstone Yoga teacher in July 2009, decision I will never regret. My teachers and students at Sunstone Yoga helped me to become a much better person. As a registered yoga teacher, for the past 2 years I have taught Power Yoga, Vinyasa Flow and Restorative Yoga with a strong emphasis on correct body alignment and body mechanics. I have applied specific Thai Yoga body adjustments on various body types and provided diet, health and fitness coaching.
I am very grateful to each and every one of you who are helping me grow.
Namaste,
Camelia Spiridon
